Make Music Nigeria 2023: A Celebration Of The World Music Day

Make Music Day is a free celebration of music, which happens around the world every year on the 21st of June in commemoration of World Music Day. Launched in 1982 in France as the Fête de la Musique, it has become a global celebration held on the same day in more than 700 cities in 120 countries. 

Make Music is a multi-venue event, open to anyone who wants to take part. Musicians (young, old, amateur or professional) from diverse musical persuasions, get a platform to share their music with the world. All events are free, Un-ticketed and open to the public. 

Lagos joined the global celebration in 2016 as Make Music Lagos. Make Music Lagos is a member of the global alliance; Make Music Alliance with Headquarters in New York which promotes the celebration of the World Music Day globally. Make Music Lagos has organised over 200 musical events across Lagos, Abuja and Uyo with over 100,000 guests physically and virtually. This year, the Make Music event is extending to many more cities in Nigeria. 

Make Music Lagos is promoted by Showgear Limited (a supplier of musical instruments and audio equipment) in partnership with industry partners and government agencies.

The Make Music Lagos stage has been graced by veterans and artists such as King Sunny Ade, Daddy Showkey, DJ JimmyJatt, Adewale Ayuba, Bez,  Waje, Cohbams, Vector, Omawunmi, Johnny Drille to mention a few; hosted by Muson, Bogobiri, Freedom park, Dominos Pizza and Cold stone creamery, etc.

We have also had resource partners such as Ten String Music Institute, Awarding winning producer Wole Oni and so many others.

Our aim is to

  • Puts Nigeria on the global map in celebration of the World Music Day.
  • Promotes Nigerian music and musicians locally and on the global scene through the Make Music Alliance.
  • Promotes music education, giving children and young adults an opportunity to explore their passion for music.
  • Promotes and contributes to the growth and development of the Music industry in Nigeria which an emerging sector and contributes to the economy
  • Provides platforms to up and coming artists to develop their talent and network with industry drivers.
  • Promotes music as a tool for social change and fosters community collaboration and participation.

The first MML event in 2016 had 2 concerts and about 35 artists performed. In 2018, the number grew to 35 concerts and music education events across the city of Lagos, with well over 200 artists performing. In 2021, Make Music Lagos became Make Music Nigeria, organizing 42 concerts and music education events across the city of Lagos, Uyo, Abuja, Ibadan, Ife and Owerri with well over 200 artists performing. Up to date we have had over 300,000 people attend a physical make music event or join us virtually.

Make Music Lagos 2023 would feature multiple events in celebration of World Music Day, taking into consideration the needs of the music industry through learning, live performances and supporting different roles in the industry. This year’s MML event will be from June 19 – June 25.
