BEMATA, Amharic for “by night,” is a singer/songwriter based in Brooklyn, NY. From an early age, she was exposed to an eclectic range of sounds — from African classics, to folk, reggae, dancehall and jazz. As the daughter of immigrants who fled a war-torn Ethiopia, music was where they freely transcended cultural boundaries. This led to a fascination for what lies beneath the surface; an exploration of truth and duality. Her songwriting explores these themes through the lens of relationship, with herself and others over driving, tribal bass lines and electronic beats.
“This track is about unlocking new levels inside of yourself. I really wanted a song that speaks to the inner transformations so many of us are experiencing right now. Whether you’re working towards a lifestyle that inspires you, trying to get that new promotion, or just generally feeling overwhelmed by all that life is throwing at you – this song is about breaking through and pulling on a strength you didn’t know you had. Writing this song with my collaborator, SXRG, definitely took breaking past a few of our own walls — and here it is! I hope it inspires everyone out there to do the same. And yeah I think that’s worth a dance.”
